Also called Fiddle-back or simply Tiger Maple – Curly Maple is a soft or hard maple which has distinctive ribbon patterns, that create a rippled lenticular effect which appears as waves across the grain as it moves in the light. Curly Maple is not a distinctive species, but a description of the figure present in the wood. Ambrosia Maple wood is named for the ambrosia fungus, which is associated with ambrosia beetles. The beetles dig tunnels into the Maple trees allowing the fungus to enter and spread. This fungus then discolors the Maple wood with streaks of grays, blacks and other colors. This paper towel stand measures (approx.) 8" x 8" and is 1 inch thick. It stands 13.5" tall and fits most regular or large size paper towel rolls with a tube diameter of 1 1/2" or more. The base of this stand is Quilted Maple of unknown specific species. Quilted Maple can be a soft or hard maple that contains a distinctive wavy "quilted" pattern - often similar to ripples moving across water. The wood is a cream white to light yellow with a darker more orange heartwood. Quilted Maple is not a distinctive species, but a description of the type of figure in the wood. This type of wood is widely used for making fine musical instruments, especially guitars. The center column pole is made of Jatoba, also known as Brazilian Cherry, from the forests of Central and South America. This very durable and colorful red-brown wood is difficult to work with due to the hardness of the wood, as it is dense enough that it can blunt cutting edges. When used as an exterior wood, it can be exposed to the elements (raw and unfinished) for decades before the wood will start to noticeably deteriorate.

    * Paper Towel stands are pictured with a partial "Bounty Quick Size" roll to show the typical appearance of the product during regular use.
