CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Our Coasters require special care to remain in good condition. Coaster Care is fast, easy and most of all - protects your coasters from damage!
MANUFACTURING INFORMATION
Our Coasters are created by layering wood in multiple directions - to create a product made of strong, thin layers. The layers are sealed on the top and sides to prevent moisture from entering. This allows the product to be thinner than traditional wood coasters, while retaining the strength necessary for general use. The alternating layers and proprietary construction sealing methods also help prevent your coaster from warping into an unusable shape immediately on contact with moisture.
Some small movement of the wood is expected as the moisture rates in your coaster may vary based on use. The top layer, which is the exotic wood used - is allowed to move independently of the bottom layers. This means the top layer may shrink or grow by less than 1/2 mm to accommodate the varied usage conditions. This movement will not alter the functionality or appearance of the product and ALSO helps prevent warping.
WAX AND IT'S IMPORTANCE TO YOU
When you receive your coasters, they have been waxed very well. The sides are waxed with a hard, durable wax to fill in any small microscopic or visible holes where moisture may pool up and the top has been waxed with our Proprietary All Natural and Food Safe Beeswax mix.
All this sealing and waxing creates a thin, durable coating to protect your products interior from getting moisture in it - with one drawback: the user must wax the coasters regularly or they will fail eventually!
We conducted long term product testing, in varied environments and have determined that waxing the coasters every 3 months is best. During testing, some wood types were able to go almost a year without any issues and others developed problems around the 6 month mark. The coasters that were taken care of properly (waxed every 3 months) remained in perfect shape well beyond a year - after daily, repeated use and in some cases purposely inflicted abuse. This is why waxing your coasters is important and will help determine the longevity of your set.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
DIRECTIONS
- Purchase or use hard wax that you currently own. We suggest you buy a tin of our Evans Woodworks Wonderful Woodwax - but if you have a hard paste wax like Beeswax or Carnuba wax at home, that will work as well (it just won't have the pleasing scent of honey and we cannot guarantee its protective qualities).
- Take a clean, lint free cloth and rub it on the wax in your container. You want a visible amount of wax on the cloth.
- Take the cloth and rub in a circular motion all across the top of your coaster. Once you have the wax rubbed in well - make a light pass with the cloth in the direction of the wood grain to smooth everything out.
- Then, take the wax cloth and wipe the sides with wax as well. It is OK if you see some wax gather in the small holes or voids. Simply use your finger to wipe the edge down after applying the wax to smooth it. If you made marks on the top while doing this, smooth those back out with the grain as well.
- Place the newly waxed coaster in a clean, low dust and room temperature area to dry for 24 hours. If the wax is still sticky after 24 hours it probably means you applied the wax to thick. To correct this, simply wipe the excess off with a cloth and let dry again.
- Once dried, your coaster is now encased in wax and will repel moisture - protecting the wood inside from damage.
